About Hawthorn Mill

Hawthorn Mill in Leeds offers 34 individual flats for rent, specifically designed for the over 55s. The homes offer a great sense of independence whilst living in a friendly, welcoming and safe community.

Located on Cobden Road, just off Leeds ring road and close to Lower Wortley Health Centre, the homes are close to a range of local amenities such as shops and bus stops, plus transport to nearby supermarkets.

 

 

Life at Hawthorn Mill

Hawthorn Mill is designed with older people in mind. It has a secure door entry system into the building and each flat has its own secure front door.

A scheme manager is on hand most days to provide advice and support to residents, although this doesn’t include personal care. We do have close links to social and health care agencies if you need additional help.

Being surrounded by like-minded neighbours means you make friends and share social events in Hawthorn Mill’s modern communal areas.

 

A social hub

Our communal facilities are provided for all the residents’ use and regular events are held. The lounge is open at all times for residents who want to get together for a coffee and a chat.

Planned events can include themed parties, film afternoons, fish and chip lunches, coffee mornings and craft groups – in fact, anything you and your neighbours fancy.

We are a community hub, which means the communal facilities are sometimes used for events and meetings with other organisations or Connect residents and occasionally we throw open our doors to other neighbours and the local community.

As a resident, you can also arrange your own events, such as games nights, and, as everything is under one roof, you can even pop along in your slippers.

 

The scheme manager

The scheme manager is usually on site Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

They provide, and answer, welfare calls and are on hand to check everything is okay with the residents.

The manager offers advice and support, guiding you in the right direction to get answers to any questions you might have.

They cannot help with individual tasks, such as shopping, cleaning or collecting prescriptions, but can advise you on where you can get extra help, if you ever need it.

 

Extra facilities

There are a number of other facilities available to residents of Hawthorn Mill, which are covered by the costs of your rent and service charges.

We provide an internal bin room for all your rubbish so you don't have to dispose of it outside.

The lounge is a shared area that residents are free to use, as much or as little as they like. It comes equipped with a television, DVD player, music player, jigsaws, board and card games and books.

It is a perfect space for coffee mornings, party nights, meetings and general get-togethers.

Every flat has its own kitchen. But there is also a communal kitchen to cater for social events.

There is a guest room available for visiting relatives or friends. A small charge is made for the room, around £10 per person per night.

If you would like to book the room, please let the scheme manager know with as much notice as possible.

Priority will be given in instances where a relative or friend needs to stay because a resident is very ill.

In these cases we might need to ask someone else to vacate the room, but this is very rare.

Anyone booking the room is expected to leave it clean and tidy.

Each flat has an alarm system for emergencies. The service is run by Telecare, who is part of Leeds City Council. The alarm call service operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

It is a confidential service provided by trained staff, who will respond to calls for assistance.

An emergency call is raised through the intercom system when a pendant or pull cord is triggered.  Your call is answered by the scheme manager, if they are on-site, or Telecare operators at a call centre.

Staff know exactly where the call has come from and can view medical or contact information you have provided. All information held is stored confidentially in line with data protection law.

We have communal laundry facilities fitted with quick and efficient washing machines. Tokens are available from the scheme manager to cover the costs of the washing machine and tumble drier.

There is also an area outside for drying clothes.

We only ask that the machines are not used after 10pm so other residents are not disturbed by the noise.

There is no plumbing for washing machines inside individual flats.

There are two outside areas for residents to enjoy, with outdoor seating for sunny days.
