From garden to table
A gardening project, developed from resident suggestions, has been gaining popularity at North Kirklees Women’s Refuge.
What began as a simple herb garden, has managed to flourish through the time, effort and hard work of the people that live there.
Last summer, residents decided to expand their garden, managing to grow strawberries, mini carrots, tumbling tomatoes, chards, onions and a variety of salad leaves; as well as making an attempt, albeit unsuccessful, at beans. They also introduced marigolds and nasturtiums to help control any insect issues and the children planted some sunflowers.
The garden has been great for the adults to get involved in, allowing them time to relax and refocus their mind, and build a community, and it has also been a learning opportunity for the children. Being able to see the produce go from garden to table has given them a great insight into the food chain, as well as a strong feeling of accomplishment.
I picked some chives and made an omelette with cheese and had a lettuce and chard side salad. It was delicious! -NKWR resident
For the winter season, the residents planted cabbage, beetroot and winter salad leaves. This year they aim to start a little earlier with the vegetables in order to get them at the table for Christmas dinner!
The North Kirklees Women’s Refuge aims to ensure that residents are safe, secure and supported to build themselves back up after traumatic experiences. Transition to living in supported services can be difficult. We want residents to feel like NKWR is their home and that they have independence. Regular wellbeing sessions, days out and projects, which are organised in partnership with residents, give them opportunities and autonomy over what they do.
