Free days out in West Yorkshire
Want to get out and about in West Yorkshire? From carnivals to fishing lessons, we’ve put together a list of 14 activities and events that make for a great day out.
1. Jubilations at Outwood Park
Where: Outwood Park, Wakefield
When: June 5, 1pm
Join Outwood in celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee for a jam-packed afternoon of family fun. There’ll be queen-themed fancy dress, a fairground, magician, puppet theatre and more! There’ll even be a brass band supplying the music. All ages and dogs welcome.
2. K9 Party in the Park
Where: Manor Heath Park, Halifax
When: July 3, 12pm-5pm
Join the RSPCA as they host a fun dog show with competitions, kids’ activities, family games, stalls and live music. There’s plenty to keep you and your four-legged friends happy on the day – including 23 different classes to enter your dog in to!
3. Kirkstall Festival
Where: Kirkstall Abbey
When: July 9, 11am-5pm
Kirkstall Festival is returning for 2022! While the full plans for this year’s event have yet to be announced, previous years featured something for everyone including live music, activities, food and games stalls, and fairground rides.
4. Leeds Dads Meetup
Where: The Holbeck Centre, Leeds
When: July 24, 2pm-4pm
Leeds Dads is a group for dads with pre-school kids. These award-winning meetups are a great opportunity to spend time with your little ones, make new dad friends or bring some along with you. Expect games, arts and crafts and plenty of fun.
5. Let’s Fish
Where: Aire & Calder Canal, Marsh Lane, Knottingley
When: June 11, July 16, 9am-3pm
Ever wanted to learn to fish but didn’t know where to start? Join one of the award-winning Let’s Fish! Events. All bait, equipment, permits and licence are provided. All you need to do is book a place online and turn up on the day. Suitable for anyone aged 6 and up.
6. Oakwell Hall Country Park
Where: Nova Ln, Batley
When: Every day, car park open 9am-5pm
Oakwell Hall is set in over 110 acres of award-winning country park and gardens and includes a visitor centre, gift shop, nature trail, picnic site and playground. There’s even a 1.4km mountain bike trail suitable for beginners.
7. Otley Carnival
Where: Otley Town Centre
When: June 18, 11am-5pm
Otley’s annual carnival is a fun-filled celebration of the local community. It starts with a parade of decorated floats travelling through Otley Centre before arriving in the Carnival Field, filled with rides, stalls, food, entertainment and more.
8. Pugneys Country Park
Where: Asdale Road, Wakefield
When: Every day, 7.30am-9pm
A great place for a family day out, Pugneys has a path for walkers and cyclists of all ages round a large central lake, as well as a smaller nature reserve for some wildlife spotting. You can even head up to Sandal Castle to see the ruins and incredible views. Parking is free for the first two hours.
9. Temple Newsam Adventure Playground
Where: Temple Newsam Road, Leeds
When: The grounds are open every day
Temple Newsam has amazing grounds and boasts an action-packed adventure playground for kids. Built in 2011, it was built to cater for disabled children, as well as the able-bodied. While the home and farm aren’t free, the grounds – including the gardens, parking, lakes and adventure playground – all are.
10. The National Mining Museum
Where: Caphouse Colliery, Wakefield
When: Every Weds-Sun, 10am-4pm
Pay a visit to the engaging and interactive coal mining museum. As well as the exhibitions, there’s an outdoor adventure playground and a toddlers’ indoor play area. Guided underground tours are also available for a small fee which you can claim back.
11. The National Science and Media Museum
Where: Pictureville, Bradford
When: Every day, 10am-5pm
Regularly named one of the best attractions in Yorkshire, the National Science and Media Museum has seven floors of galleries to discover, including state-of-the-art interactive exhibits. Learn about photography, television, animation, videogaming, the internet, light and colour.
12. Toddler Takeover
Where: Left Bank Leeds, Burley
When: Every Monday, 10am-12pm
Join Left Bank for their weekly Toddler Takeover with loads of mats, colourful soft play shapes, toys and books for your little one to explore. Meet new friends or bring old ones and their toddlers along. The event is free, just book a place online.
13. Tolson Museum
Where: Ravensknowle Park, Huddersfield
When: Tues-Thurs, 11am-5pm. Sat-Sun, 12pm-5pm
This Huddersfield museum paints a vivid picture of the city’s history with a treasure trove of fascinating objects. Set in Ravensknowle Park, little ones can have fun in the playpark after their visit.
14. Roundhay Park Festival
When: July 16, 12pm-8pm
2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the official opening of Roundhay Park! This family-friendly festival will celebrate the anniversary with live music, dancing, theatre, fairground rides, orienteering, exhibitions, food stalls and much more.
