Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Connect

As part of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Strategy and Action Plan, we regularly review our progress.

Here are our current EDI objectives are and how we’re doing on them.

Objective one: To ensure organisational culture reflects Connect’s commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

What have we done so far?

  • Our EDI Working Group meets quarterly and oversees progress against our EDI action plan. The group is working on a strategy for 2023-2026.
  • Our website and staff intranet now contains more information and reflects our commitments to EDI.
  • We’ve rolled out refresher EDI training to colleagues to make sure everyone is up to date.
  • We asked colleagues how well they understand our EDI commitments and what we could do organisationally to be more inclusive. This information will inform the long-term EDI strategy.
  • We are measuring whether staff feel included through our quarterly staff survey.

Where do we need to do better?

  • We are doing more to celebrate a range of diverse festivals/holidays throughout the year.
  • We’re developing a menopause policy and providing training on menopause in the workplace.
Objective two: To ensure customers have access to homes and services that help them live happy, healthy lives.

What have we done so far?

  • Every year we report on data about access to Connect services. We do this to identify areas of under or over representation amongst particular groups so we can take action in response.
  • We are committed to supporting people where needed, either directly or by signposting to others that can help.

Where do we need to do better?

  • We are reviewing the effectiveness of the translation and interpretation service we use, as some residents and staff have reported problems.
  • To have a governing body and workforce that is diverse and representation of the communities we service.
Objective three: To have a governing body and workforce that is diverse and representation of the communities we service.

What have we done so far?

  • We have improved the diversity of Connect’s Board and aim for the Board and workforce to reflect the population in the areas where we work.
  • We are using a wider range of recruitment boards to encourage applications from a diverse group of candidates.

Where do we need to do better?

  • We really want to hear the diverse views and voice of customers at all levels, whether that’s about things that happen in a local area, how services are delivered or influencing decision-making at the Service Improvement Forum or Board.
  • To have comprehensive EDI data to better understand customer needs, so that equality impact assessments are robust and service delivery can be tailored.
Objective four: To have comprehensive EDI data to better understand customer needs, so that equality impact assessments are robust and service delivery can be tailored.

What have we done so far?

  • We have begun to publish EDI data on our workforce, Board, and customer base on our website, which you can find here.
  • We have set some key performance measures for our EDI commitments; we will publish how we are doing quarterly on our website.
  • We are working on updating staff EDI data.

Where do we need to do better?

  • During 2023 we will be working on improving the data we ask residents to provide, so that we understand needs and requirements and can ensure our services are accessible.
